I used to quite like the American sitcom Cheers; the characters were great, the wit dry and quirky and in my view similar to west of Scotland. Their tag line became quite famous - "where everyone knows your name".

So we are hoisted by our own petard with this BNP debacle. I think this couls only happen in the UK, where we hold both the acolade and the big booby prize (combined) for political correctness and for belief in the democratic process. In short, it serves us right. Many think that democracy is the create equaller, I think it's the great leveller, that is, to the lowest common denominator.

Yesterday morning I attended a men's breakfast, we learned why it is good to "keep your axe sharp", and the message was heard loud and clear from our guest speaker Pastor Jerry.

The recent decision concerning the Lockerbie bomber has raised sad memories. A friend and colleague of mine, Bernie McLaughlin, was on that PanAm 103 flight in December 1988. Even today, every time I travel past Lockerbie on the M74, I stop in at the garden of remembrance, wanting the clock turned back.
